Editor Review of TravelSafe
The Good: The first to offer ‘cancel for any reason’, TravelSafe has ensured this benefit is unique in that it does not require you to cover all travel costs – just the portion you want covered – and those insured costs are covered up to 100%. Medical coverage is primary for international travel. The package plans include missed connection benefits and the popular non medical evacuations. Specific package plan available for groups of 10 or more. A short 60-day look back period for pre-existing conditions. Thorough coverage from terrorism to hurricanes to layoffs.
The Drawbacks: AD&D maximums are low when compared to other companies.
The Bottom Line: TravelSafe provides solid, trustworthy products with several optional coverages that help you customize your plan. The ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit is unique in the industry and gives travelers a little more choice.

We purchased a policy and had $500 of medical expenses. We made several calls to them from our trip to make sure what to do. We returned and sent them all the paperwork they asked for.
They have had the information for a month and still tell me they are reviewing the information. They have not contacted us and keep giving us the run around.
We will never buy a policy from them again. They originally told us it would take 7-10 days.
Travelsafe is a complete scam….they really are THE WORST!!! Avoid at all costs
I was taken to a hospital in Barbados by ambulance from the cruise ship. TravelSafe’s policy says that it monitors the insured during treatment and pays the upfront deposit for a medical facility. TravelSafe left me stranded, by myself, in a foreign country. I had no cell phone service. I had to pay $9,000 on my AMEX which I now have to pay in full. Their agent emailed me and said all they do is pay for my return flight once I have received the discharge from the hospital. The hospital, on the other hand, was trying to increase their charges and delaying the issuance of the discharge paper. If I was going to get off the island, I had to buy the plane ticket myself, which I did, which also had to be paid to my AMEX account. I am now out over $10,000 and still TravelSafe is no where to be found. I call; they say they will call me back; but no one does. It is a scam.
TravelSafe has a reasonably priced policy with good coverage but where they FAIL is in the claims department. TripMate took THREE months to finalize a simple claim where the airline cancelled the flight due to weather and couldn’t get me to the cruise before it departed.
It took TripMate SEVEN weeks to confirm with TravelSafe that I did have a valid policy and then ELEVEN weeks to confirm that the airline did indeed cancel the flight. After cutting the check, they held it for another week before mailing it.
They failed to pay a non refundable paid hotel reservation between the cruise and flight home. Even though the original documentation included the necessary substantiation. So I had to file an appeal. I sure hope it doesn’t take another three months for that which they missed the first time. Totally incompetent!
I just bought a policy for another cruise but told the agent, don’t even consider TravelSafe!!! Will never buy them again.
Never Buy From this Companuy
In February I had a biopsy done on my breast just a few days prior to leaving on a trip, insured by Travel Safe Insurance. I was told the sonogram was atypical and it was decided by all that is was ok to continue on the trip while waiting to hear the results. Since typically, 80 % of all biopsies are negative, halting a trip for this reason is not sensible. I tried to move the flight back, but was told I was to have to buy a complete new ticket so I stuck with the original itinerary.
Unfortunately the biopsy came back positive and I returned early to the United States. I did not put in a claim to Travel Safe for my cancelled tours, only for the return air fare. Travel Safe Insurance denied reimbursement of that airfare, stating the illness did not occur on the trip. Well, it did, because that was when the test results came back.
I find the company prejudice and uncaring towards any who have been in this unique situation. Cancer is a horrible illness, it is devastating, and needs to recognized as such and treated accordingly with caring, compassion, and validation. Travel Safe Insurance has managed to wipe that out. Please be aware that such companies do exist and are not supportive of anyone having to deal with such an illness. Nor do they follow through on what they purport to represent. It is only about a bottom line claim, and when it comes to denying such a claim with such a devastating diagnosis, this company is more than uncaring. They are heartless.
Travel Safe Insurance should be ashamed of their attitudes toward cancer.
I bought Travelsafe insurance through squaremouth.com. My luggage was broken by a hotel assistant when it was stored in a holding room. The hotel’s manager refused to write an accident report. When I applied (July 2014) for damage claim (less than $100), a Travelsafe representative asked me for tons of different papers: credit card statement, my explanation, not Reparable Statement and so on. After I sent them all of these including not Reparable Statement for which I had to pay a repair store $15 plus tax. Travelsafe sent me letter in December (2014) saying they needed statement from the hotel. If a hotel personal refused to do it in July, they probably won’t even remember me in December. I still did not receive any money from the Travelsafe. I will not recommend this company at all because they refused to pay a small claim and asked for a ton of papers. I can only imagine how they handle big claims.
Purchased a policy from Travelsafe and then cancelled the trip. Contacted Travelsafe by email to ask if the policy could be transferred to the rebooked vacation. Was told it could be, but I had to provide documentation that no cancellation penalties were incurred.
Emailed back saying I had no penalties, and really had no documentation but the cancellation notices, and would these suffice.
Never received any response as to what Travelsafe needed, and I lost my entire premium, as the policy had to be transferred before the original start date of the cancelled trip, and I couldn’t do this as I never knew what they needed.
Unhappy with customer service at Travelsafe and will be taking my business back to Travelguard, which makes it incredibly easy to just make changes online.
I purchased travel insurance from TravelSafe. I had missing flight connection claim. I had to buy airline tickets for missing flight. Claim was held by TripMate. Customer service was very good, they called me with update, I could see the update on their website too. My claim was not complicated, the person from customer service told me what papers to fill and what documents to provide. Money were given back in one month, as much as I claimed, about 500$
It appears that TravelSafe and TripMate are conspiring to commit fraud and have committed fraud.
TravelSafe interprets my policy one way but TripMate interprets it in a contrary way. In several conversations with TravelSafe to understand the term “Traveling Companion,” they told me that departing from home city, being a family member, not already having one Traveling Companion, and sharing accommodations, were not requirements for being Traveling Companions. There were other alleged requirements including knowing each other and signing up together.
However, the following TripMate employees denied my claim stating those requirements had not been met:
Ms. Linda M. Finkle, Executive Vice President
Fran Mboma, Appeals Unit
Melody Welther, Appeals Unit
Lorraine Molzhon, Appeals Unit
M. Anderson, Claim Department.
These behaviors violate North Carolina Unfair Claims Statutes and Regulations, section 58-63-15(1).
Four other pieces of evidence of fraud are as follows:
1. Not one of these requirements occurs in the policy I bought. Thus, they are changing the policy after it was purchased for the sole purpose of denying a legitimate claim. They implicit admit they are changing the policy and still use the changed policy to adjudicate my claim.
2. I provided proof that all parties on the trip coordinated transportation (booked flights together), accommodations (stayed at same hotel), and other specified services per the definition. Both TripMate and Travelsafe refuse to accept that evidence or even acknowledge it. Instead they adjudicated the claim based on their made-up requirements and after-the-fact changed policy.
3. When asked where in the policy their made-up requirements occur, each TripMate and TravelSafe person asked refused to answer. Instead TripMate changed the requirement.
4. While TravelSafe responded one way to my questions about the requirements when looking to purchase a policy, they responded just the opposite when questioned after the policy was purchased. I bought the policy through Squaremouth who intervened on my behalf. According to Squaremouth, TravelSafe now agrees with TripMate and not with their own previous answers.
FRAUD: TripMate and TravelSafe.
Do not buy insurance from TravelSafe or any insurance in which tripMate is the administrator of the insurance policy (they determine whether claims are valid or not).
TravelSafe will interpret the policy one way (before you buy) but TripMate will interpret it in a contrary way when evaluating claims. In addition, TripMate’s employees (particularly, Linda Finkle, Executive Vice President; Fran Mboma, Appeals Unit; Melody Welther, Appeals Unit; Lorraine Molzhon, Appeals Unit; M. Anderson, Claim Department) will give fraudulent reasons for denying claims, i.e., they make up requirements.
I purchased “cancel for any reason” for my trip to Paris. I put in the claim on Nov 22 (trip wasn’t till Dec7). As of today (1/23/14) I still do not have an approval for the claim. Staff is nice but they just pass it to someone else or come up with something else they need. I believe this to be a rip-off.
Hi Ms. Soriano,
Thank you for taking time to comment and share your concerns. Your first claim form was received on December 2, 2013. In order to process the claim, our claims administrator requested additional information and that was received on December 23, 2013. The provider then had to verify the cancellation penalties in order to make sure the proper penalties were applied. That information was received on January 23, 2014 and the payment was issued on January 27, 2014. We appreciate your patience as this additional information was gathered.
Superior customer service is a priority for us, and we want to make sure we’ve addressed all of your concerns. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Again, thank you for your patience and if I can be of assistance in the future, please let me know.

Thanks Falank, I’m looking to buy insurance. I learned something from you. I’ll not be buying Travel Safe.
I purchased Travel Safe Classic Plus, cancel for any reason , the day of purchased my European Vacation in April. Unfortunately we had to cancel this dream vacation In August. Our departure date was to be Nov. 12, 2013. I have waited and waited for Travel Safe to finalize our claim. They advertise that most claims will be pain within 5 working days. I am extremely disappointed in them. I have traveled all over the world and this is the time I have used Travel safe, I have used other fine insurances and luckily have had to make a claim with and they immediately attended and paid the claim . I see another review where $7000.00 has not been paid and it has been over 1 year. People buy insurance only to protect themselves from when a large travel investment is made and one forms a bond of trust with the insurance they buy. I will never again purchase from Travel Safe, they are not to be trusted!
Hi Ms. Chavez,
Thank you for taking time to share your concerns and feedback with us. Superior customer service is a priority for us, and I’m sorry to hear about your frustrations.
Your claim form was received on September 9, 2013. Since the trip was booked through several different travel suppliers, each of the suppliers had to be contacted to verify the cancellation dates and penalties to ensure the proper payment was made. We appreciate your patience for the time it took to complete this.
If we can answer any further questions, please let me know and I would be happy to help.
Best regards,

HAHAhAHAHhA the guy who wrote this review for them is their web developer ( Damian Tysdal) These guys are crooks. DO NOT TRUST TravelSafe.
You are in for a huge surprise when you realize they don’t back up their own policies.
Hi James,
I am a licensed agent for TravelSafe, and TravelInsuranceReview.net earns commissions for referring business to them. I am not their web developer, nor am I employed by them directly.
My website, TravelInsuranceReview.net, provides articles and tutorials to educate travelers about travel insurance, as well as editorial reviews of the various companies and their products.
Hope this clears up any confusion,
Best Regards,

This is by far the worst travel insurance if you ever have a claim for the “cancel for any reason” benefit. I filed my claim and submitted all the necessary documentation and yet after six weeks of waiting for any response they denied my claim.
They lady on the phone said I insured my trip for $3,000 and they calculated my trip cost at $3152 and thereby was not covered under the “cancel for any reason” benefit as I did not fully insure my trip cost. When I explained to her that according to there own website I was only responsible to insure the NON-REFUNDABLE portion of the trip and not the REFUNDABLE portion, she became agitated and told me I was wrong even tough it is clear as day on their site to not include any refundable portions of the trip in the trip costs. When I purchased the coverage the original lady I talked to calculated my total non-refundable portion at $2,250 and I decided to be safe and insure for the $3,000, which she said was fine, just in case anything popped up that would be considered a trip costs that needed being prepaid. So I was completely covered for my claim, however they claims agency TRIPMATE said that the total trip costs include the refundable portions, even though the website and the lady from TravelSafe said it does not since they would not be responsible for those refundable portions.
I am in the process of reporting both agencies to the Better Business Bureau, The State Insurance Department, The Attorney Generals office, and have contacted my family’s lawyer to possibly draw up a lawsuit against both agencies. I understand that it may do nothing but I will get the word out how much of a rip-off these agencies are. I’ve never had a problem before with any other agency…thats what I get for trying something new and going with someone else.
Wow, thanks for the info regarding this company! Sounds like they just want you to buy and then cheat you out of cancellations. Is it even legal to make people insure refundable costs I wonder? I spoke to a rep regarding a luxury African safari I’ll be taking with my family which is quite expensive, and they told me to just insure the non-refundable amounts, but never mention insuring the refundable amounts. Glad I read this site and your review! I’ll go with someone else… sorry about you situation.
Mr. Falank,
The policy requires that all amounts subject to penalty – whether the trip is canceled months prior to departure or the day of departure – are insured. Given your concerns, however, we checked the penalties and found that although your airline ticket printout clearly says “non-refundable” – and your claim was processed on that basis – the airline advised that the ticket is in fact subject to a small penalty, regardless of the date of cancellation. With this information, your claim is payable under the policy provisions.
Please note that the letter explaining our review of your claim invited you to contact our office if you had any questions or had any additional information you thought was pertinent to your claim. We hope that you will feel comfortable contacting our office should you have any questions in the future so that we can quickly clear up any discrepancies or misunderstandings.
Best regards,
TravelSafe team
TravelSafe Team said, “…the airline advised that the ticket is in fact subject to a small penalty …”
Excuse me, but isn’t losing one’s entire airfare because it is non-refundable a BIG penalty?
If I understand TravelSafe Team correctly, tucked into the BIG amount of the non-refundable airfare there is a “small” amount that is labeled as a “penalty,” somehow being defined in such a way as to distinguish it from the larger non-refundable amount (which I guess in the technical trade jargon really must not count as a “penalty”).
So most of the lost airfare is not defined as a penalty; but a “small” amount of the lost airfare is (wink, wink) a “penalty.” Thus the airfare is in one portion non-refundable, and in a second portion it is an unrecoverable penalty (either way, the customer still gets nothing back).
TravelSafe Team said, “The policy requires that all amounts subject to penalty … are insured.”
So according to TravelSafe Team’s scenario, we must reason that because the airfare includes some (small) penalty amount, a decision to purchase the “cancel for any reason” benefit means that the entire airfare is a trip cost that is required to be insured.
Thus, when it comes to buying “cancel for any reason” coverage, the whole non-refundability thing really doesn’t mean anything. (Again, an inference from TravelSafe Team’s own explanation.)
TravelSafe Team actually refutes the common guidance to buy coverage for the non-refundable trip costs only. In other words, if a customer really knows what’s good for him/her, that guidance should be ignored. (Shhh! Word might get around.)
TravelSafe Team said, “With this information, your claim is payable.”
Huh? So somehow, even though the small penalty required the whole airfare to be insured, it also means that TravelSafe Team can shave $152 off the trip cost and still meet the requirement “that all amounts subject to penalty … are insured.” So they get to chop $152 off the amount of the trip cost and, presto, the trip cost goes below $3000, and they can satisfy Mr. Falank at long last.
Now wait a cotton-picking minute. … Is this what TravelSafe Team really meant to infer through its stated reasoning? Perhaps what TravelSafe Team said was a broad brush attempt to save face; however, it turns on dubious plausibility.
In other words, this magic trick has been exposed.
Mr. Falank said that he indeed counted the airfare in the non-refundable trip cost ($2250) that he insured. Therefore, that “small penalty” would logically have to be found somewhere in the other part of the trip cost that Mr. Falank thought was refundable, whatever that cost was. So what exactly was that other cost? It amounts to the $902 difference between $3152 and $2250.
Look again at what TravelSafe Team said. TravelSafe Team has NOT agreed with Mr. Falank on the $902. Remember, they only shaved a “small” amount off the $3152 trip costs. TravelSafe (excuse me … TripMate) Team still required about $700 (i.e., an amount more than $2250 but a little below $3000) out of the $902 to be included as a “cost subject to penalty,” in order for the “cancel for any reason” benefit to be payable to Mr. Falank.
AAARGHHH!
Now I know why I hated dissecting earthworms in school. This smells even worse than the good-for-nothing-anymore Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886!
Excellent job!!!Congrats!!!

Does anyone know how Travelsafe and Tripmate are related? I bought insurance, unfortunately, through Travelsafe and then Tripmate responded with the denial. I found information on Pennsylvania’s Secretary of State website for both and they are under different names.

Sherry C. Did you contact the state insurance commissioner and the Better Business Bureau? What was their response. Has anyone contacted the Attorney Generals Office? I am having difficulty with this company and am curious as to what actions others have taken. The owners on the Secretary of State’s website for PA show that a Scott and a Chester Perfetto own this company.

Our flight was cancelled and we missed an entire day of our European vacation. Even though TravelSafe policy states they pay “up to $150 per day” for travel delay our claim was denied. We are currently sending a complaint to the Insurance Commissioner and the Better Business Bureau.
DO NOT PURCHASE INSURANCE THROUGH THIS RIPOFF COMPANY. I purchased cancel for any reason insurance on my niece to come on a trip with our family. She got into trouble with the law and was incarcerated….she was not able to travel with the family.
We contacted the travel agency, the hotel and the airline. The agency and the hotel confirm that we did notify them in plenty of time. However, the airline can’t prove we called and the insurance company is claiming that since the airline can’t prove we cancelled, we don’t have coverage.
My niece was in jail; these people are morons. She wasn’t traveling anywhere and we notified plenty of peole of her cancellation. We’ll be suing the company and we’ll be looking for punitive damages. This is bullshit!
Buyer beware!! I booked a vacation for my family and our nanny and purchased TravelSafe insurance with the cancel for any reason rider. We had to terminate our nanny’s employment because she committed a felony. I obviously, cancelled our nanny’s trip with our family and contacted TravelSafe to get a refund on her portion of the vacation. Travel Safe told us that because our nanny was listed as the “insured” on the policy (even though I paid for the vacation and the insurance) then they would issue a check for the non-refundable portion but only in our nanny’s name. Since our nanny was deported because of her crime we obviously have no way of having our ex-nanny signing over a check to us so it seems like we are out the cost of the trip for our nanny plus the cost of the insurance. The policy does not anywhere clearly define this (it uses the word “You” will be reimbursed in the cancel for any reason section but nowhere does it define this term the policy as meaning the insured will be reimbursed. The claims administrator agreed that this wasn’t clear but was unable to help us.
I purchased a travel insurance policy with a cancel for any reason for a trip to Beirut and Egypt. Below are some pitfalls of purchasing insurance and my review of Travel Safe Insurance.
Because of a terrorist incident in a city on our itinerary as Declared by the US State Department, we were able to be reimbursed for most of our expenses. However, the recent civil uprising in Egypt would not be reason to receive compensation.
I was told the process for reimbursement should take 3 weeks. It took 8 weeks! Of course, I needed to provide all documentation regarding the trip, i.e, reservations, cancellation policies, credit card payments, etc. This is to be expected; however, it took a great deal of time
1. Please be careful when selecting the amount of your coverage. The person on the phone leads you to believe you should tell them the total amount of your trip costs; however, they only insure your prepaid costs that were purchased 14 or 15 days after the purchase of the policy. Consequently, you will pay more than you need to. I told the customer service representative that my Total cost was $6000 and insured for that amound; however, I should have told them $3000 which was my prepayment.
2. They lead you to believe the Cancel for Any Reason clause which you pay approximately 40 % more for covers you if you need to cancel the vacation; HOWEVER, THE CANCEL FOR ANY REASON ENDS TWO DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR TRIP!! Therefore, if you become ill and it is not a covered reason, you are stuck!
3. Read the policy like a lawyer. If you read the policy after the purchase, you will find many of the things you believe covered are not.
4. Also, since the policy pays Prepaid Expenses only, if you were to cancel the vacation with a tour operator too late, you are responsible for the balance. In my case, if i cancelled within 7 days of my tour, I was responsible for the Total cost of the trip since my cancelation was only 4 days prior to the beginning of my trip.
Finally, I read many places where travel insurance companies TRY to find a way not to pay you. I was satisified with Travel Safe because they did pay me; however, I am upset because they did not explain the Cancel for Any Reason clause correctly, and deceived me regarding how much of my trip needed to be insured. The insurance cost $640
I have used Travelsafe several times over the last 5 years but have never had a claim. Have always purchased over the phone and received very friendly service. The exception was when I tried to purchase insurance for a 3 week trip to Florida a few weeks ago. . The woman I spoke with with was very abrupt and unfriendly. When I said I needed advice she said without hearing my question ‘we are not allowed to give advice’. You can use our website!’ Perhaps she was the same person Mr. Pouliquen spoke with as it was during the same time frame. If it weren’t for Travelsafe’s good reviews I would have purchased elsewhere because of this person. In the end I did use the website.
This is the second time we are securing a cruise travel insurance through TravelSafe. The coverage of the “Vacation Policy” matches our emergency assistance needs well and, this time, we thought we would also consider the trip cancellation/trip interruption. However we didn’t fully understand the interaction between the trip interruption and missed connection features of the policy and couldn’t figure out whether the requested “trip cost” figure was per person or for the two of us. So I called TravelSafe for clarification. The “don’t bother me” attitude of the person who answered the call was enough to put me off. It would have helped if she had had the answer to my first question but she simply refered me to the claims department. More importantly, after I had rephrased my second question a couple of times, she indicated that the trip cost figure was the cost per person and not the total cost of the trip for the two of us. I processed the policy purchase accordingly and, when the “purchase confirmation” document arrived a few days ago it was clear that this was the wrong answer. We are ending up being insured for half the trip cost and thus – bottom line: Don’t expect much from Travelsafe Customer Service. The Claims Department is far more helpful and, hopefiully, more accurate in its answers to your questions.
Earlier this year I purchased cruise tickets for my wife & I and, at the same time, purchased a Travel Safe Vacation insurance Plan #925. Approximately 3 weeks prior to the cruise, I developed a very painful hernia which resulted in our having to cancel our cruise plans.
I immediately contacted Travel Safe claims. The Travel Safe claims representative was understanding and downloaded to me claim forms and instructions for completing the claim process.
I followed the instructions, obtained all required documentation and a check fully reimbursing us for the cost of our tickets was received within 30 days of when we mailed the claim form/documentation.
Bottom line, I could not have asked for better service.
TravelSafe does not pay claims. I purchased “cancel for any reason” trip insurance. There were three criteria that needed to be met for a claim. I met all three but was denied. The first denial gave lists of “other covered events” like earthquake, sick family member etc. (but it was ‘cancel for any reason’) They also told me I hadn’t purchased enough insurance. I purchased enough to cover my non-refundable penalties as stated in their “Travel Insurance Certificate”. The appeal was a joke. They told me my non-refundable penalties were more than they were. I backed up everything proof from my VISA statements. They ignored my letter of appeal and just printed more parts of the policy that didn’t apply to my situation. They take your money, but don’t pay the claim. Don’t buy from them
What a nightmare!!!! My in-laws booked a $25,000 cruise in September for January. In December, his doctor suggested some tests for a prolonged cough and told him it would be best not to leave the country so he cancelled. It’s March 24th and TravelSafe is still dragging their feet about paying the claim. They have required medical records back 3 months prior to him even booking his trip, trying to look for some sort of pre-existing condition on which they could deny his claim. Their claims process is at best shoddy and at worst, it should be considered criminal. DO NOT purchase this product.
I agree they are a scam.
