Editor Review of HTH Worldwide
The Good: HTH Worldwide offers a few package plans for single and multiple trips throughout a year. They’re known, however, for their high-quality travel medical plans for both U.S. and non U.S. citizens.
The Drawbacks: Only one of the student plans covers U.S. students. Repatriation reimbursement across all HTH Worldwide plans is relatively low when compared to other companies. Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions in some plans is not available until after one full year of coverage. Benefits for claims resulting from downhill skiing and SCUBA diving are limited and there are no options for adventure sports coverage in any of the HTH Worldwide plans.
The Bottom Line: A leading provider of international health insurance since 1997, HTH Worldwide has a good number of travel medical plans, including single-trip plans, annual plans, major medical plans, and plans for students. They also offer a few full-featured package plans. Many of their plans are available for senior travelers and non U.S. citizens.

NO way! I called to get a clear understanding of their travel protection plan and how things might work with my unique situation. In trying to understand her through the poor headset she was obviously wearing, all she could do is start EVERY sentence with “like I said”, BEFORE she even said anything. She seemed frustrated at every simple question I asked. Worst off when a “sales” rep tells me she “doesn’t know” something that right there is a red flag. I’m looking elsewhere!
Have to agree. Two sales people I spoke to were obviously bored with their jobs, and didn’t know their stuff to boot. They guy I spoke just read the same information I had in front of me in response to questions, and the young woman just didn’t seem to know very much about the product she was selling. I called Roam Right and they were much better, but I was told a dental emergency would not be considered grounds for trip cancellation and I would have no benefits.
Now I’m not planning on anything like this, but can you imagine having to leave on a trip with a nerve in your tooth acting and needing a root canal?
I went back to HTC and bought their insurance, which seemed slightly better on dental emergencies. Then I got access to their “Member Services” site, where I could supposedly access y plan details and certificates. Wrong. The details of my plan weren’t there, or the two details that were were wrong. When I called Customer Service to find out what happened, I was told they didn’t have access to my details, no matter that I have a certificate of coverage number. So you get a number but your data isn’t properly in the system.
So I’m thinking this whole operation is maybe really bad, and I’m thinking of cancelling and going elsewhere. A shame because they have good prices and what seems like it should be good coverage. But I know what kind of time and effort getting services can take when the IT at an operation is off. I don’t want to deal with that kinf=d of frustration, and I don’t want to spend hors on the phone for everything that may come up. I’ve spent a couple of hours on the glitches I’ve run into now. What a pain.
I have spent a good deal of my life traveling and living overseas. HTH is by far the worst company I have ever dealt with. Buyer beware. They are all very nice on the phone, but NOTHING ever really get done, and claims are never paid, I have been waiting for over a year!
Its the most pathetic insurance ever ! I was a member of HTHStudents
I filed a claim around May/June 2011 . It is February 2012. I have called them million times and still no progress.
Every time i call , a new excuse is made !

The service provided by HTH is extremely deceptive: they have nice packages, but will then refuse to sell them to you if they suspect your health is not perfect or may deteriorate during your travels.
My wife and I did get approved, but then all claims got denied because of lack of information. The strange and annoying part about it is that they never told us the claim was lacking details, as a matter of fact one month after submitting the claim when we asked what the status was they told us it was being processed and would be resolved soon so we did not bother to contact them again for another 2 months, thinking it was just slow to process!
What is the point of having travel insurance if you are going to end up spending months fighting for the claim?
I bought a travel policy with a million dollar medical limit for $14 for a 8 day trip and they pick up the full $1,350 hospital bill in London when I tripped and broke my arm. Best $14 I ever spent!!
I’ve used HTH several times after receiving a recommendation from my brother who was on one of the student plans and I have always had a good experience with the company. Last year, when my wife become very ill with food poisoning in Costa Rica, all I had to do was call their 24/7 collect number and they quickly found us a local ER to go to and even set up direct billing so we paid nothing out of pocket and everything was covered in full. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. Highly recommended.
If it were possible to give zero stars, I would do so. This insurance company has not been helpful. Like the other review says, filing claims is a nightmare. My boyfriend and I submitted are claims together in the same email with the same pdf attachments, but for some reasons they only received his claim and not mine. When we were out of the country and needed to come home early due to sickness, we called them to see what we could do and what the insurance would cover. They were not helpful at all and couldn’t give us any information. I advise you to purchase insurance with another company.
The policy choices are very good.
Filing a Claim is a nightmare. I’ve mailed documents, emailed twice and all Customer Service says is we have no claim for you. It has now been SIX weeks and still ‘no claim has been received’.
Everyone is very polite.
