After reading the multitude of negative reviews by previously insured travelers, I am concerned about buying a group package on an expensive trip at a significant premium.
Can anybody comment on how best to arm-twist the Company to pay the benefits promised, especially if all the documentation hurdles were met and the claim still denied on an undisclosed technicality? Do complaints to Insurance Commissioner help, or expensive litigation? I would expect a Regulatory body with “teeth” to enforce policy is needed in this unscrupulous industry. Any thoughts for this wary future traveler?

I am sitting not the phone now waiting for MH Ross to pick up to find out about my claim. The keep asking for a claim number to entered after the tone, when the tone occurs, I enter my claim number, then they repeat the request. This is a simple weather delay that caused a missed flight in country – only 99.00 and you would think it was a round the world trip.

They keep timing out and dumping me into voice mail. I made the claim 10 days ago, one would think that it would be easy enough to verify the documents I sent in.

My son’s next trip (in 2 months) will not be insured with MH Ross as it seems this is not something that I can actually use, it was a waste of money to get.

Do not bother to buy MHRoss Travel Insurance. If you have a claim, they will be slow to respond, then respond with no refund. I made a claim in July 2014, Claim ID #6009576, filled in all necessary documentation. As of September 2014, I received a call telling me that I was denied because I bought $4000 worth of insurance, but my trip costed $4400. I provided them receipts showing all I was claiming was $1000 downpayment of a trip that totaled $3885. So I guess they added what they needed on to get the fine print to kick in… ! Was told I can appeal. Now will have to take alternate action.

    Re: Claim #6001112
    Dear Sir or Madam,
On May 5th 2014 I purchased MH ROSS policy (#225786) via the InsureMyTrip.com as a protection for my family upcoming trip to Italy scheduled for departure June 16, 2014.
Due to my mother hospitalization I had to cancel my trip the weekend of June 15th. On June 16th I filed the claim with the MH ROSS and the same day submitted all the required documentation. At the time of submission I was assured that the claims are usually processed within 10 business days.
When ten days passed by (06/26/2014) I contacted the MH ROSS for status update, and, in spite of calling the MH ROSS on a daily basis, was not able to receive any feedback or claim status until 07/09/2014, when the claims officer contacted me and requested additional information and asked a few questions. I submitted all the requested information the same day, but was wondering WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG for the claims officer to realize they need this documentation. Please, note – the claim is pretty straightforward – only one big ticket item (air fare to Italy, ~$3000), and a few small items (<$500). The procedure for reimbursing for the airfare is very straightforward and should be very familiar to the insurance company, and it is highly strange that it took so long.
Keeping my questions to myself, I obliged and submitted all the information the same day, July 9 2014. Today is July 17, 2014, I have been calling the MH ROSS daily (Jeff at extension 322), and although Jeff submitted multiple requests to the insurance company on my behalf, the insurance company ignores me and him – no response has been received as of today.
I find this practice unacceptable and negligent at best or fraudulent at worst.
If the claim is not finalized by the end of the day today, I file the complaint with the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (http://oci.wi.gov/) and reserve the right to take a legal action against the MH ROSS.
I believe, the claim has to be paid in FULL as soon as possible, and insurance premium reimbursed to compensate for the terrible experience.

      Mr. Gelfand,

I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s hospitalization and any frustration the claims process has caused you. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us on the phone the other day.

If I can answer any additional questions in the meantime, I’d be happy to help.

They did what they agreed to do. I purchased a policy to cover a scheduled cruise for February and one week before our departure I was diagnosed with a tumor in my left kidney. The doctor just laughed when I asked if we could handle it after the cruise. So we had to cancel. I submitted copies of the hospital stay and credit card receipts for the airline and cruise. The review process took a little longer than I thought it should because of the snow storms in Kansas, but we have been paid in full for our trip. I have one less kidney but I’m glad I bought travel insurance.

MH Ross would not reimburse me for the charge that Delta levied for me to restore my frequent flyer miles in my account due to having to cancel a trip. Their rationale was that they only reimburse for pre paid expenses. A sad excuse on their part. They have lost me as a long time customer.

TOTALLY AGREE. save your money and don’t bother insuring with MH Ross. I spent months documenting and submitting every single piece of evidence to prove my claim and in the end they denied my “trip interruption” under any flimsy excuse they can find. they will redefine how they want to interpret things. SAVE YOUR MONEY!! A member of my hiking group was injured and that caused the trip/hike to be interrupted. They said this member was not a “travel companion” even though the hiking group by any definition MADE them a “travel companion”. They wasted my time documenting this trying to wear me out or make me give up. when I completed dozens of pages of documentation the waited over a month and finally came up with “not a travel companion” excuse. SAVE your MONEY – this was a total waste of money and time.

Do not trust this company. They do not live up to their agreements.

I purchased a policy with a cancel for any reason option. The trip was for a European travel at $1432/ticket. I was unable to travel overseas. After contacting MH Ross and asking how to handle whether I should cancel the ticket or pay change fees, I was told to contact Delta. I used the ticket for domestic travel and was charged a $250/ticket change fee. I applied for a claim for the $250/ticket. Since the domestic ticket was less than the international ticket, they are rejecting my claim as I did not have to pay any additional amounts.

Sorry, I don’t recall that being a clause under “cancel for any reason.” I should have cancelled the ticket and charged them the entire amount.

I am appealing. Their behavior is appalling.

        A follow up post.

My claim has been resolved to my satisfaction. Both Ms. Machat, SVP at MH Ross, and a member from Insuremytrip.com (where I bought the policy) responded to my postings. Ms. Machat reached out even though she was on personal time.

I sincerely appreciate both of the companies’ efforts.

It was unfortunate that a SVP needed to get involved with this. I believe this was a fairly straight forward claim. I only claimed the unreimbursable expenses, I worked to minimize the loss, and I provided documentation. If MH Ross had contacted me before denying the claim initially, we probably could have kept this out of the social media. However the initial review seemed very uninformed, and the phone call I received to inform me of the denial was meaningless. The phone rep only read off the letter, had no information about the claim, couldn’t address any questions and kept talking over me. They had a script. I had to tell the rep that they need to stop talking and listen to understand my concerns. Even with that I got nowhere.

That concerns me. I hope MH Ross looks at the first line experience of customers, because travel insurance is about piece of mind and a travel insurance company is only as valuable as how it handles its customers’ piece of mind.

Terrible company with incompetent humans. They keep asking for info already given, claim is taking over two months, and no light at the end of this tunnel. I wouldn’t trust these people to water my plants.

my experience also. this travel insurance joke is only a trap to get people to donate their money to MH Ross. their site will not allow me to post a review even though I purchased with that very email id. READ THIS AND SAVE YOUR MONEY. travel insurance via MH ROSS may make you feel good but you’ll never see it if you have a claim. Total sham.

    Be careful with this company!
We purchased MH Ross “advantage Asset plan” that provided trip cancellation and trip interruption. Our Nile cruise was cancelled on our very first day in Cairo due to demonstrations that broke out during our incoming flight. We needed 4 nights to arrange travel home.
Continental canceled return flight to US but appropriately refunded our unused return ticket! MH Ross on the other hand refused to pay for an obligatory last minute BA ticket (which through the effort of our stateside daughters we were able to obtain) to leave Cairo for home during the riots. MHRoss paid $1256 for the Cairo stay/delay. Total documented unpaid claims against MHRoss are $1400 for canceled pre-paid Nile cruise and $3400 for emergent BA economy seats to Boston.

I bought a cancel for any reason advantage policy from MH Ross. I did cancel and it is taking them over a month to review my claim and they have no answer for me when the review process will be complete. Now with air travel impacted by the volcano, who knows when I will get my money???
