The Bahamas is a tropical paradise that attracts many tourists from around the world, and since the Bahamas is located in the tropics, it is a wonderful place to visit all year round. However, many tourists prefer not to travel to the islands during certain times of the year.
Hurricane season runs from June through November
The hurricane season lasts from the 1st of June to the 30th of November. During this time of the year, there is a higher chance the islands will be hit by tropical cyclones.
According to past records, hurricanes do not occur in the Bahamas as frequently as they do along the east coast of the US mainland. For example, there is about a 1 in 5 risk of a hurricane in the Bahamas compared to a 1 in 4 risk in Miami.
Some islands are better than others
Outside of the Bahamas, the southern islands of the Caribbean sea are less likely to be affected by hurricanes, specifically the “ABC” islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. Also, Trinidad and Tobago tend to have fewer hurricanes.
If you travel during hurricane season, buy travel insurance
Travelers who are planning to visit the Bahamas should get travel insurance to protect their trip investment. Travel insurance provides reimbursement for pre-paid, non-refundable expenses if you need to cancel a trip for a covered reason such as a hurricane damaging your resort.
